Brace yourself as I have collected several links to the essential items you’ll need as a first-time mom. I provided a few choices as there are variations of the items that you can consider. I will mention that I own a variation of these products. Not the exact ones as I didn’t only receive things from Amazon but I included the top-rated items I personally would buy for my baby. I’m considering some of these items for my next baby.

I would greatly appreciate it if you used my links and let me know how this list served you in the comments! I do plan to include my own review on items I own.

Let’s get into the items you’ll need as a first-time mom.

Baby Monitor

In no particular order, we start off with a baby monitor. I didn’t even consider having one until it was gifted to us. I found some that are both with or without wifi and even one that can be mounted. You may think you don’t need one but you’ll definitely want one when you have to be in a different room from your baby for extended moments in time. I watch my baby even while in the bathroom!

Burp Cloths

Babies spit up and drool a lot. You should get a pack or two of these to have around your home because accidents occur frequently. Always pack more than one and yes you will be washing these often.

Bassinet

I didn’t know what a bassinet was but let me tell you especially if you are breastfeeding you will want your baby nearby. I wish I knew about these bedside sleepers that would’ve given me peace of mind.

I’ve included some with changing tables which will be so important to have as well so you’re not bending over your bed in pain trying to change a diaper.

Car seat

If you want to be able to move your baby anywhere you need a car seat. And you’ll want a good one too. I’ve included some options that come with a stroller.

You’ll need this to leave the hospital with

Car seat with stroller

Going on a walk? Errands to Target or the grocery store? You’ll want a stroller with good control and storage. Some people even buy accessories such as umbrellas, covers, and toys so you may want to consider those too!

A place to have baby safely

Listen, you will want to put your baby down at one point and it has to be someplace safe. Here are a few suggestions besides where they sleep.

Nail filer

Babies will begin to claw at you or their face. Trust me you will want to tame the claws and personally, I’m looking into an electric trimmer. Here are some options to consider.

Teething

A huge milestone will be a teething baby that will drool and want to put everything in their mouth all because their little baby teeth are coming in. I went a little overboard and got more than a few of these when you only really need maybe one or two. There are so many out there that I only included a place to start.

Swaddles

I’ve never known about the art of swaddling and if you haven’t either I’ve provided links to some variations of them so you can explore. This is specific to newborns up to maybe three to four months before they learn to roll over.

Some babies prefer it more than others so it will all depend on your individual baby’s needs. The structured ones are nice because you don’t have to learn how to swaddle.

Wearable blanket

Once your baby rolls over it’s time to retire the swaddle and you might be thinking how will I keep my baby warm? It’s too hot for thick PJs and it’s dangerous to leave loose blankets around a baby so I considered using wearable blankets. This way baby is used to a routine and keeps warm at night.

Blanket

You’ll need some blankets because of their multifunction serving as a cover in a car seat or stroller, a swaddle, or even a lightweight playmat for tummy time.

Changing table

It would be best if you had something to change diapers. Even if just for the first few months before baby rolls over. I was in a lot of pain as one is post-birth so leaning over my bed to change diapers was awful for me and my back. My baby rolls over now so I will be getting rid of mine but some of these options like the crib combo are nice because it can be extra storage on the side.

Sheets

Whether you decide to cosleep or have a crib or bassinet you’ll need to check out some sheets or covers. Here are some basic ones.

Sound machine

When I heard about these I was on the fence about it. Now I’m recommending it because baby becomes more sensitive to hearing while feeding and asleep. I use my Amazon echo dot to play a white noise podcast because I already owned it and didn’t need to buy a separate machine but here’s an option to look into.

Bottles

Whether you breastfeed or give formula you’ll want some bottles. I used to pump and use bottles which is a fine alternative to breastfeeding but the amount of washing – let’s just say I haven’t bottle-fed in a minute. I will provide some links to bottles for you to consider.

Sanitizer

If you got baby bottles and pacifiers or toys you’ll need to sanitize. There are many ways to do it. Here are some options.

Bibs

Once solid food feeding starts you’ll have a messy baby. Here are some options of bibs that are out there.

Diapers

A baby needs diapers! Did you know there are multiple sizes? Seems like common sense but I had no idea. Keep track of the baby’s weight to buy new diapers.

Pjs

Sleepwear! For the first few months, this is most of what my baby wore.

Towel

Babies take baths and will need towels. This is obvious but I honestly forgot. So don’t forget!

Sponges/Washcloths

You’ll need supplies to help bathe your baby. Here are some good ones to use.

Body wash

Another obvious one. You’ll need some body wash and shampoo to keep your baby smelling good.

Wipes

For changing diapers or spit up you’ll need something to clean up. I considered doing DIY reusable wipes but I don’t have the time. Instead, I use store-bought. I prefer ones with no smell and water-based.

Rocking Chair

As I type this I am on a rocking seat having just fed my baby to sleep. A chair will save your back. I highly recommend you plan to have one so you aren’t ruining your posture.
